Establishment
The Commerce portfolio was created on the disestablishment of the Trade and Industry portfolio, during the second term of the Fourth Labour Government. This coincided with the disestablishment of the Department of Trade and Industry and the creation of the Ministry of Commerce. The Hon. David Butcher MP (Labour, Hastings) became Minister of Commerce on 12 September 1988.
