The New Zealand Army provided a range of military units and sub-units for deployments of up to battalion sized group. Its main function was to protect its people, land, natural resources and infrastructure. The New Zealand Army assisted in maintaining security in the South Pacific and provided assistance to New Zealand's Pacific neighbours. The Army also contributed to global security and peacekeeping operations and other appropriate peace support and humanitarian relief operations.
Roles of New Zealand Army:
- To secure New Zealand against external threat, to protect sovereign interests, including in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and to be able to take action to meet likely contingencies in our strategic area of interest.
- Maintenance of an identifiable national force 'in-being' at an appropriate state of readiness for low intensity operations including aid and relief tasks
- Maintenance of a capacity for expansion over a longer time frame to a land force organisation capable of conducting mid to high intensity operations.
