[0] => This function was originally administered by the Colonial Secretary's Office, and later Internal Affairs. The function of preserving historic graves and monuments in over 81 sites throughout New Zealand was managed by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage. A large number of these originated from the New Zealand Wars of 1840-1872, South African War, World War I and World War II. Other various types of national monuments erected by the New Zealand government were also managed by Culture and Heritage, they commemorated former Prime Ministers such as Michael Joseph Savage, Richard Seddon and William Massey. They also liaised with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and assisted with locating overseas war graves in Commonwealth cemeteries.
