            [history] => The Wildlife Service began as a distinct branch of the Department of Internal Affairs in 1945, but its beginnings in the department date back rather earlier than this. The acclimatisation societies, which began in the 1860s (Southland 1867), were under the oversight of the Colonial Secretary (the predecessor to the Department of Internal Affairs). The Colonial Secretary's Office was involved in routine clerical administration, registering acclimatisation societies and gazetting notices concerning hunting seasons, the species of game which could be taken , and other such matters under the Animals Protection Act, 1867. 

It was not until 1945 that the role of Internal Affairs was formalised. Before the war the functions of the Department had occasionally been referred to informally as the "wild life branch". In August 1945, G F Yerex (who had general responsibility for various wildlife areas as well as being Director of Deer Operations), held a conference with his staff, to draw up a plan for the development of what he called the 'Wild Life Division' of the department. 

The Wild Life Division began as little more than a new collective name for the Animals Protection and Game branch of the department's activities. But in the post-war reorganisation, as staff returned and old activities were re-established and new ones et in train, it gradually emerged as a coherent and distinct branch of the department under Yerex's leadership. There was no formal announcement of the Division's establishment, until the following year, when it was mentioned in the department's annual report. By that time the new organisation was well-established and the terminology had been tightened up as well: it was officially titled the department's 'Wildlife Branch', with Yerex as its 'Controller'. Functions of the Wildlife Service: 

Conserving and protecting wildlife 
· supervising the protection, whether partial or absolute, and control of wildlife 
· regulating hunting and the seasons for hunting and killing game 
· issuing licences to hunt and kill game 
· investigating reports about game causing damage to property 
· educating the public about the conservation of wildlife and freshwater fish 
· preparing and carrying out wildlife surveys particularly of threatened species 
· carrying out research into wildlife and developing and using land to provide wildlife sanctuaries, refuges, or other reserves for the breeding and preservation of wildlife, and management reserves for the propagation and distribution of game 
· supervising acclimatisation districts and acclimatisation societies and approving the latters' rules and expenditure 
· issuing plans and publications for the advancement, conservation management and control of wildlife and the eradication of harmful species of wildlife 
· regulating the keeping and obtaining of absolutely protected species as museum species 
· administering two acclimatisation districts
