Before 1958, the National Parks Authority acted as the Board for Fiordland National Park, and the Park was administered by the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Invercargill. The National Parks Authority was established under the National Parks Act 1952 to “generally control in the national interest the administration of all national parks in New Zealand”. The National Parks Authority provided general guidance and policy to protect native forest, to act as a sanctuary for native birdlife, and to preserve the area for recreational use. 



In 1958 the Fiordland National Park Board was established. The Board members were appointed by the Minister of Lands on the recommendation of the National Parks Authority. 



The Fiordland National Park Board was chaired, from the inaugural meeting on 12 July 1958, by the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Invercargill, and members included representatives of organisations with a special interest in the Park. The Department of Lands and Survey acted as executive agency for the Authority and the Board, with executive officers responsible for the policy and management of the Park.



The Board functioned as a “Local Authority” within the meaning of the Town and Country Planning Act 1977, and had an advisory and reviewing roles at a national and regional level, for the management of reserves and protected areas. 



After the passing of the National Parks Act 1980, the Fiordland National Park Board was disestablished and the Department of Lands and Survey took over responsibility for the Park.
