Ministry of Transport (MoT), Whangarei Office 
1968 - The MoT office was established (1). The Ministry of Transport, Whangarei was formed from the merger of the Whangarei offices of the Civil Aviation and Transport Departments. MoT divisions were (2) :

    
Civil Aviation 
    
Road Transport 

1972 - The Marine Department merged with the Ministry of Transport, Whangarei(3).  



The Ministry of Transport Whangarei acquired full District Office status c.1972, prior to this Whangarei reported to the Ministry of Transport Auckland District Office for stores and financial activities. 




1985 -  The Transport Department Whangarei consisted of the following (4):

    
Civil Aviation Division - Aerodrome and Flight Service Station 
    
Marine Division - Mercantile Marine 
    
Meterorological Service (Kaitaia based) 
    
Road Transport Division - Traffic Safety, Vehicle Testing Stations 

 
The principal functions of the Ministry of Transport Whangarei, by division, included: 



(a) Road Transport 



- investigation of traffic engineering standards, vehicle loadings and dimensions and speed restrictions,



- traffic control, enforcement of traffic laws, traffic accident management and investigation, and driver testing,



- traffic education in schools, adult education and school traffic services, 



- periodic vehicle inspections. 



(b) Marine 



- promote the safety of ships and seafarers,



- promote safe cargo handling in New Zealand ports,



- look after the operation and maintenance of lights and beacons. 



(c) Civil Aviation 



- responsible for ensuring the safe efficient and economic operation of aircraft and provide the airway facilities which included air traffic control and communications.
 
1988 - The Ministry  of Transport  restructured into independent business groups (5):

    
Air Transport Division 
    
Marine Transport Division 
    
Land Transport Division 

These business units paved the way for corporatisation or privatisation of services previously provided by the Ministry of Transport.  The Land Transport Division was placed in charge of administering the Whangarei District Office. The remaining services offered at Whangarei were known as the Commercial Services Branch of the Land Transport Division (6).
1993 - The Land Transport and Marine Transport sections in Whangarei became Crown entities called the Land Transport Safety Authority and Maritime Safety Authority respectivity, these new agencies set up offices outside of Whangarei -  the Whangarei District  Office,Ministry of Transport  was effectively closed down from this date.
1994 - The remaining services, the vehicle testing stations and Marine and Industrial Safety, were commercialised or privatised (7).
