The Department of Civil Aviation in Whangarei had its origins in the Air Department of 1944. There was an Air Training Corps and a Royal New Zealand Air Force Recruiting Depot (1). By 1948, Civil Aviation was a branch of the Air Department in Whangarei(2) and by 1960 the branch was known as Civil Aviation Administration of the Air Deparment,Whangarei(3).
1964 - Civil Aviation Administration became a fully fledged Department of Civil Aviation. Staff and offices at this time included an Aerodrome Superintendent and Flight Service Station (4).
1968 - The Whangarei offices of the Department of Civil Aviation and Transport Department were amalgamated to become the Ministry of Transport, Whangarei.
