	This series description was compiled as part of a project to capture the finding aids created prior to 1987 into the GAIMS system. The dates of this series are based on the dates of holdings. Please note that Item 1 of this series is now with Record Group series SAMOA-BMO2 item 17 (series 8319). Provenance: Some of these records were transferred from the Island Territories Department to Archives New Zealand in 1952. Subsequent transfers were made after that date.

	There are also papers relating to trade and commerce, the fruit and copra trade (especially a banana enquiry of 1938), the importation of Chinese labour, complaints about unemployment, education matters, the visit of the fono o faipule (Samoan Native Advisory body) to New Zealand, enquiries into the Public Works department, the 'Joyita' shipwreck and maps.

	BASIS OF RESTRICTIONS

	Restrictions apply to some files for reasons of national security and economic stability, international relations and individual privacy under the following sections of the Official Information Act 1982: 6 [a, b(I)(ii), d(vi), 7 [a, b and c] and 9 [2(a), 2(d), 2(f)(i), 2(k) ].

	VETTING OF FILES

	The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade are vetting all files in this series. This involves the inspection of each file to determine the appropriateness of the security classification and restriction for the file. Once vetting has occurred, changes to the restriction of individual files may be made. This process is ongoing.

	ACCESS RESTRICTIONS

	

		 Files marked as open access have been checked by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade vetting team and are now open to researchers.
	

		 Files marked as either ‘restricted’ or ‘may be restricted’, with or without a date (year) of restriction expiry, are not available for viewing at this time. Access requests for these files should be directed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.


	Note: The release of ‘restricted’ or ‘may be restricted’ files is formally confirmed through the Ministry’s annual file release programme. All such files should therefore be regarded as restricted until such time as their status is updated to ‘open’ on Archway. This applies even if the restriction expiry date, as recorded in the record list on Archway, has been reached or passed.

	 

	PRESERVATION ACCESS RESTRICTIONS

	Some records are also protected under section 49(1)(a) of the Public Records Act 2005.

	Gloves must be worn when viewing photographs, and will be provided by Archives New Zealand.

	Maps/plans in a toblerone box require special handing due to their size and storage conditions. Gloves and paper weights will be provided where required, again by Archives New Zealand.
