The National Film Library (NFL) operated a film loans service to primary and secondary schools, and other educational institutes. Films contained in this series were used for this purpose. During the 1950's and 1960's the National Library took initiative in seeking out early film made in New Zealand and about New Zealand. The collection and selection of films continued with New Zealand made material, material about New Zealand, material of New Zealand historical interest, material of special interest to New Zealand, some film classics, some film about film making, some famous people and some historic events.
The films were controlled by the Film and Video catalogues produced by the National Library which was subsequently updated over the years. Its main sequence was arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System which also expanded the collections criteria by including more international productions. Information on how to borrow, care and use films to avoid damage (use of film projection) was also in the catalogues. School staff were able to obtain an NFL projectionists’ certificate making them a competent projectionist. Experienced projectionists could become examiners as films were examined after every lend where condition was recorded with splices and footage removed plus comments, date of lending and examiners initials.
Multiple copies of individual films were held, with branch offices in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch holding copies. Auckland branch served all of Auckland Province except the east Coast north of Napier. The Christchurch branch served the South Island. The Wellington branch served the rest of New Zealand and a number of Pacific Islands. 
Most of the films was catergorised using reference number prefixed by the letter 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'D' with a bar number to indicate the copy number, e.g. A1467/10, A1467/11, etc. the letter prefix indicates the length of each film. Some films were held in 2 reels with a R1 and R2 reference which would be included after the bar number.
Sometimes a booklet was contained with the film which held notes for teachers, scripts or warning information. Audience ratings were also recorded in the catalogue as well as on the film can with the following abbreviations: j - junior, p - primary, i - intermediate, g - general, sg - special groups, t - tertiary, s - secondary, ss - senior secondary, js - junior secondary.   
When the films were delivered to Archives New Zealand also received a number of U-Matic tapes mostly copies of films plus other material which is assumed was lent to schools for teachers use in training or observing teaching techniques.
