From 1950, patient files were top-numbered into a new sequence when the patient was either discharged or had died. The files were assigned a new running number from this date.
Most of the files in this series have been stamped on the front cover with the word 'Purged'. In 1965 a circular was sent to all Medical Superintendents from the Head Office of the Department of Healths Division of Mental Health. The circular recommended that the files of patient who were discharged between 10 and 50 years ago could be purged. The papers to be removed included "leave forms, trivial correspondence, temperature charts, etc". The following papers were to be retained - one copy of the preliminary statement, applications for admission and medical certificates, Clinical notes on forms M.H.57 and M.H.58, Medicine Cards, ECT Cards, Questionnaires and any correspondence likely to be of legal or clinical significance.
In 1969, Voluntary Patients who were discharged had their files included in this series.
