On 1 July 1850 all applications received for land in Canterbury were opened at random in front of applicants in the Association’s London Office.  The first application opened was given the number Land Order no 1, the second number 2 etc.  A second ballot was held on 30 August 1850 for late applicants. When the applicants arrived in Canterbury the person with land order number 1 got first choice for land which became rural section no. 1.  This system meant early applicants did not necessarily get all the good land - all 300 had equal chance. The Canterbury Association Land Sales book [Archives Reference Series 12523 CH290/6] is a record of applicants. 
These Land Orders show the order of choice number, purchase money paid, name of purchaser, address and occupation of purchaser and date of issue of land order.  If applicable a power of attorney was recorded on the reverse.
