Peaceful now, Mount Tarawera provides a mute reminder of the 1886 eruption which claimed 153 lives and destroyed the internationally famous Pink and White Terraces. "Tarawera" is a dramatised documentary which vividly depicts the Rotorua volcanic region in its fascinating diversity, while recreating the terror of the eruption 100 years ago. With historic black and white photographs, dramatised 1880's sequences, actual footage of 112 year old Mrs Parewahawaha Leonard who remembered the eruption from her childhood, plus shots of colourful tourism in the thermal area today, "Tarawera" brings to poignant reality a slice of New Zealand's dramatic history.
