From swamp forest the Royal Spoonbill is a comparative newcomer to the Vernon Lagoons, some three thousand hectares of wetlands, marshes, streams, lagoons and low-lying islands surrounded by hills and protected from the sea by a narrow, 8 kilometre long boulder bank. At times, the region is the lonely habitat of a few sea-birds and waders, at others it is crowded with a vast and widely varied population as migratory flocks gather in their thousands. One of New Zealand's leading wildlife photographers has closely observed the Royal Spoonbill's arrival, courtship and nesting through to the mature flight of the young birds, against the wider environment of the vernon and its many inhabitants.
