The Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006 reformed the law relating to law practitioners, and the separate regulation of lawyers and conveyancing practitioners. The purposes of the Act were to maintain public confidence in the provision of legal services, protect the consumers of legal services, and to recognise the status of the legal profession. The Act provided for a more responsive regulatory regime in relation to lawyers, enabled conveyancing to be carried out by lawyers and conveyancing practitioners, and stated the fundamental obligations with which, in the public interest, all lawyers had to comply with in providing regulated services.
