            [history] => Christchurch Teachers' College began in 1877 as a department of the Christchurch Normal School. There were 31 students on the roll: 25 women and 6 men. In 1905 the teacher training section of the Normal School was redesignated as the Training College with its own Principal. Initially a pupil-teacher system of teacher training operated. Under this plan, which persisted until 1931, students between the ages of 13 and 16 were engaged as pupil-teachers. This system was replaced by a probationary assistance system. Admission to college was based on the Training College Entrance examination. At the end of the course students were required to serve a year in a school as a probationary assistant. In the late 1950's the word "training" in the college title was thought to be inappropriate and the name changed to Christchurch Teachers' College. 

The College was located in the Normal School buildings in Kilmore Street after the Education Board moved to new premises at Oxford Terrace. It reported to the Education Board intially through the Normal School and Technical Standing Committee and later through the Normal School and Teachers' College Standing Committee. One of the most significant changes in the development of the college was the setting up of the Post Primary Department in 1954 under the control of an Associate Principal. In 1969 the College assumed responsibility for its own administration through a College Council, although the Council was still financially accountable to the Department of Education. In 1970 the Secondary Division of the College moved to new facilities at Ilam and the remainder of the college joined them in 1978. By the mid seventies the College Council had full governing powers and became responsible for policy, staff appointments, finance,resignations and termination of trainees and organisation. 

In 1989 all Teachers Colleges in New Zealand changed their names to Colleges of Education. The change of name recognised the wider role that Colleges now played in the community. In 1991 a Maori name for the College, Te Whare Whai Matauraka Ki Otautahi, was also adopted. 

The main function of the College is the preparation of beginning teachers for the Early Childhood, Primary, Secondary and Special Education sections of the teaching profession. It is also responsible for the Continuing Education ofgraduate teachers, and providing instructional courses for people in other sections in teaching related sections. It also conducts courses in the New Zealand Diploma of Business.
