The Pirongia State Forest Park had a local officer in charge, and was also administered by the Te Kuiti District Office of the New Zealand Forest Service, under the management of the Auckland Conservancy of the NZFS until 1987, after which it was administered by the Department of Conservation in Hamilton. Records relating to the Forest Park administration were kept at the Forest Park headquarters.

The Forest Service was responsible for fire protection over Forest Parks, and also attempting to balance competing use of the land, including:

production of timber or other forest produce
protection of the land and vegetation
water and soil management
protection of indigenous flora and fauna
recreational, educational, historical, cultural, scenic, aesthetic, amenity and scientific values3
