Its function did not change when it became part of a combined Meteorological Department with the Weather Reporting Department as the basic dichotomy between Meteorological Research and Weather Reporting was continued.
The Meteorological Dept was again seen as a separate unit in 1891, although it and the Weather Reporting Department had gradually become more separate with the "combined Meteorological Department" for a long time before this.
By 1903, a shortage of staff and political interest meant that the processing of the climatological records had fallen behind, and the stations which recorded the information were short of instruments.
Since the Director of the Meteorological Department was still also the Curator of the Colonial Museum and Secretary to the Scientific Institutes, very little time and emphasis was able to be spared on Meteorology.
In 1906, the Meteorological Department, with one staff member, was again combined with the Weather Forecasting Branch of the Marine Department, to form the Meteorological Department (ABIX), which was controlled by the Marine Department.
