A large number of records created by the Department of Agriculture, and its predecessor agencies, were destroyed in a fire that severely damaged the Hope Gibbons building in October 1952. The building was being used as a storage facility for early records (mostly from the 19th and early 20th centuries) created by Government agencies.
Date of disestablishment is based on Secretary of Agriculture, Commerce, and Tourists Circular No.1, dated 16 September 1909. Also, an Evening Post article entitled "Department of Agriculture - Reorganisation Scheme" (Volume LXXVIII, Issue 68, 17 September 1909) states "The scheme of reorganisation of the Department of Agriculture, Commerce, and Tourists, has now been completed, and will come into operation at once."

Establishment 
The Department of Agriculture was formed on 31 March 1892 by the amalgamation of the Livestock and Agricultural Branches of the Department of Crown Lands1. The new department was charged with the duty "to collect and distribute information on subjects connected with agriculture among the settlers by means of lectures and pamphlets and generally to study and promote the welfare of the farming community".
Functions and Responsibilities
The department was responsible for gathering farming, dairying and fruit knowledge and expertise and disseminating it amongst the agricultural, pastoral and horticultural industries. As most of this information was obtained from countries with different environments, it also began to carry out a programme of experimental work to identify agricultural and horticultural techniques suitable for New Zealand conditions. It's functions were centred on areas such as animal health and diseases, plant diseases, control and eradication of plant and animal pests, development of the dairy industry, and trials of new species.
Structure
The Permanent Head of the Department was the Secretary of Agriculture and Chief Inspector of Stock, who was responsible for the on-going activities of the organisation. The Secretary reported to the Minister of Agriculture. In 1892 Head Office staff consisted of the Secretary, a Chief Clerk, a Veterinary Surgeon, a Dairy Instructor and a Fruit Expert. Inspectors of Stock, who reported to the Secretary, were based in Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Gisborne, Napier, Waimata (Herbertville), Hawera, Wanganui, Masterton, Blenheim, Nelson, Christchurch, Rangiora, Ashburton, Timaru, Lake Tekapo, Kurow, Oamaru, Dunedin, Mosgiel, Clyde, Naseby, Tapanui, Balclutha, Invercargill, and Bluff2.
By 1900 the Department had appointed a biologist, viticulturist, entomologist, and chemist, and had set up a number of experimental farms. In 1902, the Department consisted of eight branches: Veterinary, Dairying, Biology and Horticulture, Chemistry, Poultry, Experimental Stations, Stock Inspectorate, and Agriculture Statistics. Head Office was composed of the Secretary's Office with branches responsible for correspondence and accounts.
Prior to the restructuring of the organisation in 1909, the Department was grouped into ten divisions3:

    
Live Stock and Agriculture Division (formed 1907) - Headed by a Chief Inspector of Stock and Director of Experimental Farms, the Live Stock and Agriculture Division was responsible for the direct control of the inspection of stock, dairies, collection of statistics, control of noxious weeds and rabbits (and other pests) and livestock quarantine. It also controlled the Experimental Farms and experimental research associated with those farms. 
    
Veterinary Division (formed 1902) - Headed by a Chief Veterinarian and Bacteriologist, the Veterinary Division was responsible for the investigation of diseases in stock and the inspection of meat at abattoirs and meat-export slaughterhouses. 
    
Dairying Division - Headed by a Dairy Commissioner, the Dairy Division was responsible for the registration of butter and cheese producers and ensuring that butter and cheese was properly branded; grading the quality of butter; inspecting farms and obtaining access to sources of poor quality milk and instruction of factory managers on improvement of hygiene; the prevention of the export of unhygienic butter; and providing advice and recommendations on dairy equipment and technology. 
    
Biology and Horticulture Division - Headed by a Departmental Biologist, the Biology and Horticulture Division was responsible of providing advice and instruction in fruit and crop growing methods, control of orchard pests, and inspection of orchards, crop farms and apiaries. 
    
Viticultural Division (formed 1904) - Headed by a Viticulturist based in Auckland, the Viticultural Division provided instruction and advice to the vineyard sector, and experimented with different vine and grape varieties. 
    
Chemistry Division - Headed by a Chief Chemist, the Chemistry Division was responsible for the analysis of soil samples to detect deficiencies, and provide advice and make recommendations to farmers on the use of fertiliser. 
    
Poultry Division - Headed by a Chief Poultry Expert, the Poultry Division had depots in Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin that prepared poultry and graded eggs for local consumption. It also encouraged export of poultry to overseas markets. 
    
Fibre Division - Headed by a Chief Fibre Expert, the Fibre Division was responsible for grading flax fibre and hemp. 
    
Manure Sterilisation Division (formed 1904) - Headed by an Inspector of Manure Sterilisation, this Division was responsible for ensuring manure was sterile and free from diseases such as blackleg and anthrax. Two Inspectors were based in India and Australia to ensure sterilisation at the point of manufacture. 
    
Division of Publications - Headed by an Editor of Publications, this Division was responsible for producing and distributing information and instructions associated with agriculture and other activities that the department undertook.

Disestablishment
As part of an economy drive by the government, the Departments of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce, and Tourist and Health Resorts were combined to form the Department of Agriculture, Commerce and Tourists, which began operations on 16 September 19094. All existing divisions of the Department of Agriculture were abolished except the Chemistry Division, which was transferred to the Dominion Analyst, Department of Internal Affairs.
