This series was part of the Department of Education's main Head Office correspondence filing system, being the central filing system employed between 1914 and 1982. The "Old Series", as it became known, documented the department's major functions and activities.

The series, classified by multiple number subject, replaced the annual single number system that operated until 1914. As the Department periodically purged its records, little from the nineteenth century has survived.

The "Old Series" was officially closed in 1982 when a major new classification programme was implemented. This new programme led to the creation of the "New Series" (NS). However, papers continued to be filed in the Old Series until the dis-establishment of the Education Department in 1989.

The item list for the 25/- sub-series includes 25/CC (Child Care) files, top-numbered into this filing system from a predecessor series. The files were originally created by the Department of Social Welfare, which was responsible for Child Care services between 1972 and 1989. At that time the files were classified with the designation CC followed by a running number. In 1989 responsibility for Child Care services, and the associated Child Care records, was transferred to the new Ministry of Education, where the records were incorporated into the 25/- sub-series. These 25/- files were then transferred to Archives New Zealand by the Ministry of Education as part of accessions W4262 and W5082.

Readers should note that Education Department registered files not in the GAIMS system will be controlled by the Education Department [Record Group] agency ACIG.

The registers were in use while Ruahine School was open, between 1897 and 1945.

This series contains the official minutes of the monthly meetings held by the School Committee and the Board of Trustees of Rangiwaea School.

From 1905 to 1989 the School Committee was responsible for keeping the school in good repair and order, providing for the proper cleaning of the school and outbuildings, the day-to-day running of the school, keeping accounts for submission to the Wellington Education Board, and forwarding to the Board each year a report of education matters within the school district.

The Committee was replaced by a Board of Trustees, pursuant to the Education Act 1989. Made up of parents and representatives who were elected by parents every three years, the Principal and a staff representative, it was responsible for running the school and overseeing educational aspects such as policy writing, finance and maintenance.

The minutes, which are either handwritten into minute books or printed onto loose paper and pasted into minute books, contain the following information:

Date and time of meeting;

Members/officials present;

Apologies;

Confirmation of the previous meeting's minutes;

Business.

Principal's Reports, financial statements, charters, strategic planning and property material, and other papers were also filed with the minutes.

The minutes were read and confirmed at the next Committee or Board meeting, and were signed and dated by the Chairperson once confirmed.

The registers were in use when Albert School was open, between 1877 and March 1936. Only one registers appears to be extant, covering the period 1885 to 1936 (it includes entries for students first enrolled back to 1880).

This series is consists of records created by Mangatoro School while carrying out of its educational responsibilities. The school was open between 1926 and 1961.

Records includes record of surveys, registers of progress and achievement, and daily attendance registers.

Record of Surveys

These volumes record pupils from standard one upwards, plus pupils preparing for entry to standard one, showing the results of periodical surveys of class work, on which promotion to higher classes depended. For each pupil, details are given of age, classification, name, standard of work in each subject, special remarks, and new classification.

In the back of each volume is a separate section containing general reports on the surveys and the school in general.

Detailed directions for compiling the register are found in the front of the volume.

Registers of Progress and Achievement

These registers were used for recording the periodical surveys of schools which were carried out twice a year. A separate register was used for each class or group of classes under each teacher.

The registers contain some or all of the following information:

The student’s name and age as on 1 January of the current year.

The time since his/her admission to their first school as on 1 January of the current year.

His/her present classification.

Attainment in various subjects according to a scale of 1 to 5, and the character attributes they bring to their learning (e.g. stability, co-operation, independence, perseverance) on a scale of A-D.

Brief qualitative statements on each pupil’s abilities in particular areas (e.g. reading, oral and written language, spelling, mathematics etc.), followed by general reports and comments about them.

Head Teacher’s reports about the standard of each class as a whole, and the proficiency of the class teacher.

Public School Registers of Daily Attendance

The registers were printed by the Government Printer for generic use by all public schools. Details of the school, class, teacher, and period covered were filled out on the front of the register by the teacher.

The registers are divided into quarters, with the year and the quarter ending date at the top of each page. The information recorded is:

Number;

Admission number;

Name of student;

Age (years, months);

Time since admission (years, months);

Standard last passed;

Attendance details (column for each of weeks 1 to 14; dates; attendance for each day – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday);

Times present (1st week to 14th week);

Total for quarter;

Remarks.

At the foot of each page for the quarter, a running total was kept for each week:

Number of attendance (morning, afternoon);

Total attendances;

Number of Times the School has been open;

Average attendance;

Weekly roll number.

Attendances, times, and working average was also totalled and recorded for each quarter, as was the average roll number (sum of weekly numbers divided by number of weeks).

This series contains historical records of West End School. These records have been created or collected by the school to document its history, including its interactions within the local and wider community.

These records include:

This series consists of the records from the main/central filing system of the Ministry of Education's Head Office. It was created on the establishment of the Ministry in 1989, and replaced the Department of Education's central filing system (see series 7750). Some files from this predecessor system were reclassified (i.e. top-numbered) into this series after they were closed.

The records in this series document the Ministry's major functions and activities, and are arranged using the alpha-numeric system of classification. Files were registered with an alphabetical prefix that represented a particular subject, function or activity, followed by multiple numbers relating to matters within that subject/function/activity - e.g. IC30/01/02/5, INTERNATIONAL CO OPERATION AND LIAISON - OECD - ORGANISATION FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION & DEVELOPMENT - OCED Projects - (Operations).
