	Content



	The registers contain the following fields:



	• Serial number: Next consecutive running number is used. One other number is also entered into this field, but its derivation and function is not known.

	• Regimental number: This appears to be the unique regimental number issued to each soldier.

	• Regiment.

	• Rank.

	• Name: Officers (Lieutenant and above) are written in red ink, all other ranks are in black ink.

	• Hospital admitted to: The main hospitals recorded are Brockenhurst, Codford and Hornchurch.

	• Hospital transferred to: 5 columns for subsequent transfers.

	• Date of discharge.

	• Disability: A brief summary of the complaint.

	• Date of death: Dates are entered in red ink.

	• Class of disability: Each disability is classified according to a standard scheme. The early volumes have the class descriptive titles written in ink on page one (these classes are listed below).

	• Remarks: The earlier volumes have this field but later volume replaces this with three extra classes entitled HF, HS and HO. It is not known what these acronyms refer to.



	The classes of disability were marked in the following columns:



	• 10 - Gunshot Wound (GSW) Head and Ears

	• 11 - Gunshot Wound (GSW) Face

	• 12 - Gunshot Wound (GSW) Eye

	• 13 - Gunshot Wound (GSW) Neck

	• 14 - Gunshot Wound (GSW) Chest

	• 15 - Gunshot Wound (GSW) Back, Abdomen, Buttock

	• 16 - Gunshot Wound (GSW) Arms and Hands

	• 17 - Gunshot Wound (GSW) Legs and Thighs

	• 18 - Amputation

	Record keeping process



	It appears that each New Zealand Expeditionary Force (1NZEF) hospital in England sent a regular return of admissions, transfers and discharges to the Headquarters of 1NZEF, the details of which were recorded in these registers.



	When soldiers were sent back to New Zealand, this was recorded on the 'Transferred to' and 'Date of discharge' fields, usually with a stamp, indicating the name of the ship and date of discharge.



	The classes of disability have been cumulatively totalled on each page and appear to have been used for periodic returns.



	Locating information



	As there appears to be no index to these registers it is difficult to locate entries for specific individuals. To do so, one would have to roughly know the first date of admission into one of the English 1NZEF hospitals.



	Provenance



	Although it is not known who created these registers, it is likely that they were created by Headquarters 1NZEF since they relate to New Zealand soldiers treated by 1NZEF hospitals in England during World War I.



	While it is not known what happened to these registers subsequent to their last entry in 1918, an incomplete set of five volumes was offered to Archives New Zealand by the Parliamentary Library in 1999.



	Although the appraisal report recommended that these volumes be eventually transferred to National Archives (now Archives New Zealand), it was decided that their deposit be deferred, under Section 8(2) of the Archives Act 1957.



	After preservation treatment at Archives New Zealand in 1999, the volumes were relocated to the New Zealand Defence Force Archives (NZDF Archives) who, in addition to providing physical custody, administered the restrictions that were placed on the registers.



	The registers were transferred back to Archives New Zealand in 2012.
