	Unclaimed money is money left untouched by its owner in organisations like banks, or with a person such as a solicitor. The length of time that passes before it becomes unclaimed money is generally 5 years. In certain cases it can be less than 5 years.



	After the organisation, or person has been unsuccessful in trying to find the owner, most unclaimed money is transferred to us, the Public Trust or Treasury.



	IRD administers unclaimed money that comes under the Unclaimed Money Act 1971. Some examples are:



	

		deposits in banks and financial institutions

	

		money in solicitors' trust accounts

	

		unpaid wages and employee benefits (including unpaid holiday pay)

	

		proceeds of life insurance policies.





	Some types of money are not considered unclaimed under the Act and are managed by Treasury. These include:



	

		any unclaimed money covered by the Public Finance Act 1989

	

		bona vacantia or ownerless money

	

		other types of property such as cryptocurrencies.





	This series contains the following records:



	

		Records of Unclaimed Money refunded between 1993 and 2000.





	They are arranged as a .csv spreadsheet file with 5969 lines. Each line of the spreadsheet details refund IDs, name and address of recipient, date of refund and the holder type. The total size of the file is 1.91 megabytes.



	The information was captured to record which refunds were paid to who.

	Information which can personally identify a person is restricted for 70 years to protect the rights and entitlements of the individuals concerned.



	Notes for researchers and staff:



	To request access to restricted personally identifying information please providing the following in writing (email or letter):



	- Your full name;



	- Your postal address (and your residential address if different from your postal address)



	- Proof of your identity (Drivers license, passport, or similar document) photocopied;



	- Specific details of information sought, who will use the information, why and for what purpose; and



	- Dates naming the period between which you will be accessing the information (please note that IR will need to receive your request at least 2 weeks prior).

	Inland Revenue's Privacy Officer will review the request and proof of identity and, if appropriate, will grant permission to access the information between the dates supplied.



	Inland Revenue's letter granting access to the specific data sought must be presented at Archives New Zealand before the information will be supplied to you.



	Inland Revenue's Privacy Officer will keep records of who has been granted permission to access the restricted personally identifying information.



	Archives New Zealand staff will access the restricted personally identifying information requested, extract it and supply it to the requester.
