The dates of this series are based on the dates of the creating agency and holdings. 

These records were transferred by the Department of Lands and Survey, Dunedin District Office, DAAK,  to the Hocken Library between 1976 and 1983. The grouping of these records into this series was done by Hocken Library. Hocken Library was the approved repository for Archives New Zealand until 1993. The end date for series relationship with DAAK is taken to be 1983.

The Royal Commission on the Sheep Farming Industry was chaired by Mr R. H. White and appointed on 4 August 1947 [New Zealand Government Gazette, 1947, p. 962 -1963]. The Royal Commission's mandate was to inquire into and report upon the conditions in and existing laws relating to or affecting the sheep-farming industry in New Zealand. The terms of reference required the Royal Commission to report on:

    
the availability of land for sheep-farming and the opportunities available for taking up land 
    
the condition and possible improvement of any land used, formerly used or capable of being used, for sheep-farming and particularly the deterioration of any such land, especially high and hill country land, whether by erosion of soil, second growth of trees or plants, spread of noxious weeds, rabbits, depletion, or any other causes  
    
the methods of improving or regenerating land 
    
the production of the industry and methods of maintaining and increasing such production, whether by better management, increased top-dressing, improved pastures, etc. 
    
the availability, efficiency, and utilization of labour, both permanent and casual, in the industry, with special reference to the drift of rural population and the possibility and means of attracting labour to the country, including the improvement of rural housing and the provision of community, social, and recreational amenities comparable with those of the towns 
    
the steps required to meet such detrimental conditions to exist in the industry by way of adjustment, reorganization, and any other measures to improve the conditions of the sheep farming industry and to promote the welfare of the persons engaged or employed in the industry. 

The Reports of the Royal Commission were published in the Appendices to the Journal of the House of Representatives of New Zealand AJHR 1948, H. 46 and AJHR 1949, H. 46A.

The transcripts in this series are the set of evidence owned by the Department of Lands and Survey, Dunedin Office. They are not the actual records of the Commission, which are probably held at Archives New Zealand Head Office, Wellington.
