	The grouping of these Registers into one series was made by Hocken Library. Hocken Library was the approved repository for Archives New Zealand until 1993. This series description was compiled as part of a project to capture the finding aids created prior to 1987 into the GAIMS system. The dates of this series are based on the dates of holdings.

	The New Zealand Company and Waste Lands Board  Allotment Register, 1847-1873 (Series 9341), records details of earlier land transactions, specifically New Zealand Company land selections and also, the selections of land under the 1856 Land Regulations for the Province of Otago and the 1858 Waste Land Act. The exact date when the Original Allotment Book, 1847-1877 in this series is a successor to the New Zealand Company Allotment Register cannot be determined easily. The two volumes need to be used together in researching because information about land transactions is duplicated in both Registers.

	Also, included in this Series are Allotment Books for special settlements created after the breakup of large estates, allotments for development blocks and purchases made under the Servicemen's Settlement and Land Sales Act 1943,  for North Otago towns, and Otago Peninsula Survey District.

	The references to Crown Grant Certificate numbers include the shoulder number reference of the volume that the crown grant certificate is in, for example 2.A.17 - Series 9347 to 9356 contains Crown Grant Certificates issued under various land legislation). Series 9430, 9431 and 9432 contain Crown Grant maps which show visually who received the first crown grant in a particular survey district.

	It is essential to remember that this series records only the first grant of the land from the Crown. Once the land passed into private hands, the Crown's interest ceased and there usually no record in this series of subsequent owners in the Allotment Books. Information about subsequent owners may be found in other land records such as Runs Registers, Otago Tenure Case Files (Series 9061), Deeds System and the Otago Land Transfer System (Series 9197) archives.

	As well as private owners, information about various reserves can be found in the Allotment Books such as recreation, railways and education reserves. Allotments for forestry,  local bodies, etc. may also listed and described. Series 9393 contains the Reserves Register gives details about land set aside for reserves.

	The Allotment Books are stamped: "Entered in Crown Lands Register" or "Refer to Crown Lands Register" for subsequent land transactions, however whether the Crown Land Register is the successor series to the Allotment Books hasn't been researched.

	Deeds System records are still held by Land Information New Zealand. Accession D84 contains tenure case files and the Runs Register, 1878-1960.

	Crown Grant Maps show similar information in a visual way. The names of the first owners are show on each piece of land. Land Office Maps will show who are the current owners or leasees when the map was drawn.
