These records were transferred by the Department of Lands and Survey, Dunedin District Office, DAAK, to the Hocken Library between 1976 and 1983. The grouping of these records into series was done by Hocken Library. Hocken Library was the approved repository for Archives New Zealand until 1993. The end date for series relationship with DAAK, is taken to be 1983.

Licenses were granted under the Land Acts of 1877 and 1879 amendment, 1885 and 1892. They are for pastoral runs on Crown Lands. They have references to Run Numbers (see the Runs Register in Accession D84)
The Licenses are for rural land as well as pastoral runs, and they include, details of the licensee (name and location),  land description (Block, Section and Survey District), Pastoral Run Number,  rental price and period of the license, conditions under which the license was issued,  a map of the land and details of related transfers of the license. Some licenses are annotated: "Expired" and some include correspondence.
The Registers of Leases, Licences and Reserves registers the applications for these licences. Series 9377 contains the actual applications for these licences. Further information on Pastoral Runs can be found in the Runs Register, 1878-1960 [Archives Reference: DAAK/D84/768]. Some licenses may be included in Series 9061 Otago Land Tenure files.
