            [authenticityNote] => This series description was compiled as part of a project to capture the finding aids created prior to 1987 into the GAIMS system. These records were transferred by the Department of Lands and Survey, Dunedin District Office, DAAK, to the Hocken Library between 1976 and 1983. The grouping of these records into series was done by Hocken Library. Hocken Library was the approved repository for Archives New Zealand until 1993. The end date for series relationship with DAAK, is taken to be 1983.

Declarations, before a Justice of the Peace, were required under the 1877 Land Act 1882 amendment to support applications for land under perpetual lease. They include the name, address and occupation of the applicant. The purchase is required to declare their age, their intention to purchase a lease, that they have not applied for a lease previously and that the lease is for their own benefit. The intention was to prevent the aggregation of land into large holdings.

Series 9061 Otago Land Tenure Case Files included the declarations and files relating to Perpetual Leases. Around the early 20th century, documentation relating to various kinds of tenures were collated into tenure case files relating to individual kinds of tenure, in this case for Perpetual Leases PL or LPs.
