These records were transferred by the Department of Lands and Survey, Dunedin District Office, DAAK,  to the Hocken Library between 1976 and 1983. The grouping of these records into series was done by Hocken Library. Hocken Library was the approved repository for Archives New Zealand until 1993. The end date for series relationship with DAAK is taken to be 1983.

The facility to purchase of land on credit was introduced in Otago in 1857 and extended by the Land Act 1877 and subsequent land acts. Applications were made to the Otago Waste Land Board or the Land Board.
If there was more than one applicant, the land was auctioned or put to tender. The conditions of the lease required the purchase to make improvements and have their residence there. At the end of the term, the land would become freehold with owner receiving a crown grant and certificate of title.

After World War One, land was made available to returned soldiers to purchase on Deferred Payment Lease. Pastoral lands were also available under Deferred Payment Lease tenure.
Series 9376 contains a Register of Applications to Purchase Land Held Under Deferred Payment Leases1885-1915.
