            [authenticityNote] => These records were transferred by the Department of Lands and Survey, Dunedin District Office, DAAK, to the Hocken Library between 1976 and 1983. The grouping of these records into series was done by Hocken Library. Hocken Library was the approved repository for Archives New Zealand until 1993. The end date for series relationship with DAAK, is taken to be 1983. This series description was compiled as part of a project to capture the finding aids created prior to 1987 into the GAIMS system.

Crown Grants are legal instruments vesting land title in private ownership, in this case, educational institutions for land to build schools, etc. The Crown Grants in this series are the office copies held by the Crown Lands Department and successor agencies.
 Land set aside for reserves are gazetted in the Otago Provincial and the  New Zealand Government Gazettes.

The legislation listed relates to the acts under which Crown Grants were issued and which are recorded in the Application Books in this series. The legislation list is not exhaustive and only covers the holdings that we have.
The Crown Grants do not have a "E" suffix, however some land records may include a "E" suffix at the end of the Crown Grant number. The "E'' relates to the spine title that the volume is in. The second volume in this series is lablled E1. In particular, the Allotment Books (Series 9341 and 9398) refer to the  number of the volume and the folio of the volume that the Crown Grant is in as well as the Crown Grant number, for example 1234 E 200 or 5678 E1 200.
