	Probate is defined as the 'confirmation of an executor's authority, granted by the Court, upon proof of the will in the proper way. In New Zealand probate jurisdiction is vested in the High Court'. (Spiller, NZ Law Dictionary).

	

	Probate and Letters of Administration files contain some, or all, of the following types of documentation:

	

	· Motion paper

	· Affidavits of witnesses or executors

	· Affidavit of death

	· Filed accounts

	· Will

	· Probate paper

	· Inventory

	· Codicils

	· Miscellaneous

	

	Where Letters of Administration only have been lodged, i.e., the individual has died intestate and no will has been made, some of the following types of documentation will be found:

	

	· Petition by administrator

	· Administration bond

	· Accounts

	· Motion paper for the grant of letters of administration

	· Affidavits

	· Affidavit of justification of sureties

	· Letters of administration

	· Miscellaneous

	This series ended in 2003 when the Courts moved to an new electronic file system which brought all Court-created files under a single registration system, although hard copy files were still created. This series overlapped for part of 2003 with the successor series (27191). Files that were given two different record numbers (and have therefore been top-numbered into the new series) can be found in series 27191.
