            [history] => The file classification list provides an overview of Department of Justice J-prefix files, and can be used to access files based on subject. The first volume contains an index to the series and a subject index that lists all subseries headings in alphabetical order with their corresponding subseries number. 

All the volumes are divided into sections based on series numbers (group numbers). Each section begins with a list of the subseries (subgroup) number headings, in subseries number order. All files are listed in record number order, with new pages started for each subseries group. The entries for individual files contain the following information: record number, file title, old file number. In addition many entries include stamped or handwritten additions. Files may be stamped 'closed' and the last file part number written above this. Often the new file number (from the successor series to 500) is written. No file dates are given. 

It is not known when the classification list was created, although it was clearly created by the Department of Justice to manage their own record systems. However, it was also used by Ministry of Justice staff to access early Department of Justice files and this is why they it was not included in the original 1996 appraisal which recommended the transfer of the index cards. The series it controls (series 500) was active from c1945-c1975. 

It is important to note that although files are included in the classification list, Archives New Zealand may not hold the file it refers to. Files may still be held at the Ministry of Justice or another agency, or they may have been marked for destruction. It is therefore necessary, once identifying a file to look at, to search for that file in the lists for series 500. This will confirm that Archives New Zealand holds the file and will provide an archives reference with which to order the file under.

	This restriction is necessitated by the identification of copies of court documents in a range of Ministry files held at Archives New Zealand. 100 years is the restriction that applies to most criminal and family related court records stored at Archives New Zealand. Given that the examples of court documents identified in Ministry files mainly relate to criminal and family related matters, implementing a 100-year access restriction in all Ministry records is appropriate.

	Some of the court documents will be subject to suppression or other restrictions imposed by the judiciary.

	Many of the records also include personal information of identifiable individuals and are subject to restriction under the Privacy Act 1993.
