The title on the volume is Royal Commission for Landless Natives. However, it is not clear whether the inquiry was, in fact, a Royal Commission, or if it was managed within the Native Land Court. 

The volume contains minutes of the hearings heard at Native Land Court sittings in the South Island, and has an index at the front which is arranged alphabetically by name of claimant and witness. Note: names are listed with given name first. 

A copy of the Order in Council authorising the inquiry is pasted into the volume. The Native Land Court was authorised "to make such inquiries as it thinks fit as to applications that may be received within six months after the passing of the said Act from Landless Natives in the South Island for Grants of Crown lands in that island." [1] 

Note: An earlier inquiry into Middle Island (South Island) land purchases (1879-1881) is also held by Archives New Zealand. Please refer to the Record Group Finding Aids for MA Series 67, and the GAIMS documentation for ABGY.
