From 1866 to 1915 the Stamp Duties Office appear to have used an annual single number filing system. In 1915 a multiple number subject filing system was introduced. Many of the papers from the old system were enclosed in file covers and given numbers for the new system, and then were never added to although use may have been made of them for reference within the office. Other files continued to have papers added to them for some time.
None of the existing papers were ever top-numbered, although in some cases new numbers were allocated to the entire file, i.e. it's place in the system was changed. Items pre-1915 within series 837 and 838 may be assumed to be part of this series.
During the restructuring of the Department of Justice, a number of records stored at the Charles Fergusson Building were offered to National Archives for appraisal (see job file 96/12). Amongst these was discovered two files from the Stamp Duties Office - an annual single number file (see series 840) and a multiple number subject file.
