            [authenticityNote] => This series description was compiled as part of a project to capture the finding aids created prior to 1987 into the GAIMS system.  The dates of this series are based on the dates of holdings.

Provenance:
Almost all of the archives of the Lieutenant Governor of New Munster were deposited in the Government House when the province was abolished.  They remained there until transferred to Archives New Zealand in July 1948.  The minutes of the Executive Council remained in the custody of the Clerk of the Executive Council until January 1952, when they were transferred to Archives New Zealand.

The archives of the Colonial Secretary were deposited in the office of the Civil Secretary in 1853.  They were then dispersed among various offices,  the majority of them being deposited for safe keeping in the Office of the Colonial Secretary of New Zealand,  in Auckland.  They remained in the Colonial Secretary's office until transferred to Archives New Zealand in March 1950.  The rest have either disappeared or have been incorporated into the archives of other departments and offices.

This series is partly compiled of Government Gazettes of the Province of New Munster, and General Government Gazettes of the Colony of New Zealand (The New Zealand Gazette). 

The Provincial Governments published Gazettes between 1848 and 1852. They contained proclamations and orders for the Superintendent, Governor and Lieutenant Governor; Government notices; financial statements; reports; correspondence and Government appointments. These Gazettes had yearly indexes. 

The New Zealand Gazette published all Proclamations, Orders in Council, and Government notices for the General Government. These Gazettes have yearly indexes also. 

The Gazettes cover the period 1850 to 1856. There is no Gazette for 1854 in this series.
