Provenance:
On 8 April 1878 the records of the Agent for the General Government were packed under the instruction of Daniel Pollen and Frederick Whitaker.  It is assumed they were placed under the care of the Colonial Secretary and later the Department of Internal affairs.  In 1950 they were transferred to Archives New Zealand.

The outwards letters to the Agent for the General Government reflect the same contents as the inwards correspondence (series 8170). This includes responses to applications from individuals for land to be advertised and sold, for Crown Grants to be issued, for licenses to cut flax and timber or permission to occupy Government property for private or public purposes. The largest single correspondence is to the Colonial Secretary, advising him of action on staffing and administrative matters. 

There is a sequence of numbers (1 to 7) on the volumes, which appear to have been assigned by the Colonial Secretary's office. The volumes contain an alphabetical index at the front, where each letter is registered with a number upon dispatch.
