	The records in this series document civil proceedings that were heard in the Featherston Magistrate's Court.

	The Magistrates' Courts' civil jurisdiction allowed the Court to hear any matter where the amount in dispute was up to $3,000. Civil claims involved arguments over money and property and could include complex commercial transactions.

	Information contained in the civil case files, which are arranged in numerical order using an annual single number system of classification, includes the plaintiff's and defendant's names, costs, and summons to court. The actual 'offence' is seldom documented in the files themselves.

	Not all civil case files have been retained - the criteria for retention, as set out in the Courts Disposal Authorities (DA564 and DA53) appraisal report and disposal schedule, was where the case created a precedent and/or where the case received national or significant local media coverage and/or where the case concerned eminent or notorious persons (some early transfers of civil case files were samples).

	Details of all civil cases heard at the Featherston Magistrate's Court can be found in the Featherston Civil record books (series 22043), which have been retained.

	The series was discontinued when the Featherston Magistrate's Court closed on 13 October 1979. The records were transferred to the Masterton District Court.
