These records were housed in the Muniments Room of Land Information New Zealand's Head Office until January 2002. They show lands offered for sale by the Crown, often as a result of the work of the Land Development Board and other agencies. [Records of the Land Development Board are also held by Archives New Zealand. See Series 7798 for further details.]

Land considered unsuitable for farming was developed by the Crown into viable farmland and then sold by ballot. (Rather than selling land to highest bidder, potential buyers registered an interest in purchasing the land at a fixed price. The purchaser for each block was then chosen by ballot.) Plans of lands for sale were published and distributed for public viewing at Department of Lands and Survey Offices. The plans in this series appear to be the Head Office record of land offered for sale. Each plan has been annotated with a number which has been placed in the record number field of the list

An Index to Land Sale Plans exists [see Series 8110] but the numbers listed in this index appear to relate to District Office copies, rather than those held by Head Office.

The plans listed in this series were originally bound into volumes, but were de-bound in the early 1990s for preservation reasons. Another set of Land Sale Plans was transferred from the Head Office of the Department of Lands and Survey to National Archives in the 1960s which was retrospectively accessioned and listed in 1990. Please refer to Accession W3740 in the Unserialised Accession Binders for further details.
