	The paper indexes were housed in the Muniments Room of Land Information New Zealand's Head Office until December 2001. In c.1989 a survey was conducted of the key historical records held by the Head Office of DOSLI [Department of Survey and Land Information]. During this process records were listed and allocated the Series number 121 which has been documented on the list in the record number field.

	Paper indexes:

	Each volume has an alphabetical index with names of the person, block, or locality, and which refers to both the deed number and the page number for that volume.

	

	The entries are arranged by Deed number and contain the following details:

	¨ Date of Purchase

	¨ Plan in Office

	The entries are often annotated with references to the relevant Crown Lands Office or Department of Lands and Survey file.

	

	In addition to the main sequence of indexes there is also a single volume of purchases relating to roads in Otago and Southland [W5280/33]. An alphabetical index of personal names is at the front of the volume. Note: only pages 1-13 of the book contain entries, after this a note states that future entries were made in the 'ordinary book'.

	

	Each entry contains details of:

	Deed number

	Name of Conveyor

	Section

	Block

	District

	Date of Conveyance

	

	The Deed numbers in this volume begin at 1, and appear to be a separate numbering sequence for roads. These were later re-numbered into the main Deeds sequence, and the 'new number' added to the Name column in red. This new number is the final deed number listed in Series 8104.

	

	Electronic indexes:

	Information from the paper indexes was incorporated into the computer database maintained by the LINZ Head Office. This database contains details about the locality of the land purchased, who from, the purchase price, and general remarks about the transaction and the purpose for the acquisition. In recent years, the database has also been used to track the movement of deeds if they have been forwarded to another agency.

	

	In 1995 National Archives' in-house library received printouts from the database for Land Districts in the Lower North Island and Upper South Island. (i.e. Marlborough, Nelson, Wellington, Taranaki, and Hawkes Bay). These books are available from the Reference Desk.

	Aperture cards:

	The Auckland office of Archives New Zealand holds aperture card (microfiche) copies of the Auckland indexes and registers, which are included in the series list. These aperture cards had been held by the Auckland office of Land Information New Zealand.
