The slips are filed alphabetically by the name of the correspondent or land block. It is likely that these indexes were created at a later date than the main index, but exact dates are not known. 



The majority of files documented by the indexes belong to the Department's sequence of Multiple Number Subject files [Series 6095]. However, the Department continued to add papers to older files, so the indexes may also contain references to files from earlier file systems:

Details of each file was recorded on a 'slip' or paper with several carbon copies. 

    
Yellow copies were filed alphabetically by subject [Series 8098] 
    
Green copies were filed alphabetically by name of correspondent [Series 8099] 
    
Pink copies were filed numerically by classification number [Series 8100] 

Series 8877 also contains an index to the multiple number files of the Lands and Survey Department.
