            [history] => This card index records the membership of Housing Allocation Committees throughout New Zealand. 

During the Second World War, the competition for access into State Rental Housing grew intense. The State Advances Corporation set up Housing Allocation Committees to choose which applicants would get priority in housing. This attempt to allocate state houses in a consistent fashion was based on a point system. Returning servicemen were allocated 50 percent of the available housing slots by the end of the war. 

The Committees were to be found in every major town throughout the country, made up of anonymous volunteers. Those appointed were "respected members of the community", responsible for deciding who was to receive state housing after State Advances Corporation/ Housing Corporation New Zealand staff had investigated and graded applications. In the very small towns, the mayor and the State Advances Officer for that area made up the Committee. 

It appears that the committees were disbanded during the early 1990s. 

Each card records the member's name and period of membership, as well as a small amount of biographical data. The quantity and type of biographical data varies from card to card, but generally records age and relevant work and/or community service experience. 

Each committee has a 'header' card, indicating its membership size. This card can also include a file reference to the relevant registered files from the State Advances Corporation/ Housing Corporation New Zealand recordkeeping system (35/83/-s, Housing: Housing Allocation Committee).
