While government financial and logistic assistance was freely given to the Committee and the New Zealand Trans-Antarctic Expedition, and the Government had Departmental representatives on the Committee, it is unclear at this stage what the exact relationship was. Certainly the Ministry of Works, Post Office, New Zealand Navy, New Zealand Army, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Lands and Survey and the National Film Unit were all involved at some point in assisting the Expedition. However the Government's long term aims seem to have been much broader and eventually led to a permanent New Zealand presence in the Antarctic with the establishing of Scott Base.
It appears the Committee operated as an autonomous private organisation to which Government contributed funds on a one-off basis, specifically for New Zealand's involvement in the trans-Antarctic expedition.
From the correspondence however it is clear that Government still retained an interest in the financial affairs of the Committee, and was keen to see, at the winding-up stage, that assets it had contributed be used to further research and exploration in the Antarctic.
