	The Civil Aviation Department, later the Civil Aviation Division of the Ministry of Transport, was responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of aviation within New Zealand and various areas in the South Pacific. In particular it was charged with the development and extension of civilian airports throughout the region.

	

	Although the items in this series contain maps produced by a number of different agencies, and consequently exhibit a variety of classification codes, they have been treated as a single series since the controlling and transferring agencies maintained the items as a single collection, arranging them by airport/aerodrome.

	

	A number of these items bear running numbers prefixed by a two or three letter alpha code. It is thought that this system was begun by the Air Department and continued by its successor agencies. Archives New Zealand has accessioned three sequences of charts from this classification system (W3204, W3220 and W3303), however they are not part of this series since the items in series 7900 comprise maps and charts from a variety of sources. The lists for these accessions may be located in the unserialised accession binders. The other main body of items in the series was compiled by the Ministry of Works and Development, a number of which bear 'AWDO' prefixes.
