            [history] => Scope 
This series was the central recordkeeping system for the Palmerston North District Office of the Road/Land Transport Division of the Ministry of Transport between 1968 and 1993. It is thought that this system was closed with the disestablishment of the Palmerston North Office in 1993. 

Files from this series are likely to have been transferred to the New Zealand Police when the Division's traffic safety function was transferred in 1992. 
 
Provenance 
Files from this series transferred to Archives New Zealand by the Ministry of Transport, Wellington Regional Office (ABKL W5156) were acquired as a result of the restructuring between 1992 and 1993. The provenance of these files was adduced from a diplomatic analysis of the receipt and despatch markings on the individual documents within each file. 

Classification 
The classification systems used by the Ministry's Regional, District and Sub-District Offices were, in theory, duplicates of the Head Office multiple number subject classification scheme (series 7457), however, it appears that there was variation in its implementation outside of Head Office. In addition, as only the corporate and road/land transport functions were present in the offices outside of the Head Office, only files from sub-series 1-34 were opened:
