As the executive body for the administration of Crown land throughout New Zealand, the Land Settlement Board met at regular intervals to consider submissions, under a number of acts, which were compiled by its various committees. 

The volumes in this series contain numbered submissions considered by the Board at its meetings under the Land Act 1948. 


Content 

Each submission includes, but is not limited to: 

· Departmental file reference (Head and/or District Office) 
· Title 
· Legal description of land 
· Summary of issue 
· Recommendation 
· Date stamp which appears to indicate that it had been considered by the Board 

As time went on, the level of detail and length of submissions increased, often including photocopied extracts from files held by the Department's Head and District Offices. 


Missing Items 

Several sequences of submissions (Case Nos. 1-1901, 4209-4676 and 4767-4936) were unable to be located when the transferring agency, Land Information New Zealand, offered this material to Archives New Zealand. The fate of the missing submissions is not known. 


Recordkeeping process 

Submissions to the Board were prepared by the staff of the Department of Lands and Survey at both Head and District Office level. The Head Office references refer to series 6095. 

The receipt of each submission was initially recorded in a workbook (series 7819) as they arrived at Head Office and were eventually assigned a running number from a register (series 7820) when the submissions were being compiled to provide an agenda for the next meeting of the Board. 

The numbered submissions, which are essentially Board agendas, were bound into volumes in two separate sequences which relate to the period prior to (series 7790) and subsequent to (series 7791) the promulgation of the 1948 Land Act.
