As the executive body for the administration of Crown land throughout New Zealand, the Land Settlement Board met at regular intervals to consider submissions, under various acts, which were compiled by its various committees. 

The volumes in this series contain typescript copies, verified by the Chair, of the minutes of these meetings. 


Content 

Each minute contained within the volumes in this series consists of: 

· Place of meeting 
· Date of meeting 
· Those present 
· Confirmation of minutes by Chair of Board 
· Precis of submissions considered, the details of which includes: 
 · Head Office and District Office file references 
 · Submission number 
 · Submission title 
 · Land district (where applicable) 
 · Decision of Board 

As time went on, the level of detail and length of submissions increased, often including photocopied extracts from files held by the Department's Head and District Offices. 


Missing Items 

Minutes from 1952-1956 (Case Nos. 3109-5058) were unable to be located when the transferring agency, Land Information New Zealand, offered this material to Archives New Zealand. The fate of the missing volumes is not known. 


Recordkeeping process 

Submissions to the Board were prepared by the staff of the Department of Lands and Survey at both Head and District Office level. 

The receipt of each submission was initially recorded in a workbook (series 7819) as they arrived at Head Office and were eventually assigned a running number from a register (series 7820) when the submissions were being compiled to provide an agenda for the next Board meeting. 

The numbered submissions, which are essentially Board agendas, were bound into volumes in two separate sequences which relate to the period prior to (series 7790) and subsequent to (series 7791) the promulgation of the 1948 Land Act. 

The Head Office file references refer to files in series 6095.
