	This series was run in parallel with another registered filing system (multiple number subject files), in electricity related government agencies such as the Electricity Department; Ministry of Energy; Electricity Division  and Electricity Corporation of New Zealand [ECNZ]. The Alphanumeric files were seemingly focused on monitoring individual electricity schemes and operational activities.

	From analysing records transfers from ECNZ and its predecessors, the alphanumeric filing system appears to have existed prior to ECNZ's establishment. As the evolution of governance in the electricity sector progressed, successor agencies inherited its predecessor's alphanumeric filing system, and then added its own papers to it as business continued. 

	The records in this series mainly document a range of strategic, investment and operational issues faced by the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand Ltd between 1987 and 1999.

	As there were two filing system running in parallel over the time, Multiple Number Subject files (7740) and this series, researchers are advised to look at both series to find all relevant files.

	The records in W5606 were inherited from ECNZ by 3 state-owned enterprises (SOEs) - Meridian Energy Ltd, Genesis Power Ltd and Mighty River Power Ltd - in 1999 when ECNZ was formally disestablished. The 3 SOEs took over ECNZ's generation assets and business, and these files were identified as being commonly required for reference by them. When the ECNZ Residual Unit was wound up it was necessary for the 3 SOEs to take over the responsibility for administration of these records. Meridian took full control of records related to its business, while Genesis Power and Mighty River Power agreed that the ECNZ Residual Unit proceed with an appraisal of the records on their behalf. Genesis Power took on the responsibility to implement the W5606 transfer.

	The records in W5783 were created by the Trans Power Establishment Board and were inherited by ECNZ when the Board was disestablished. When ECNZ was disestablished the records were then inherited by The Treasury because of its involvement in the financial management and the reporting of the Board to The Treasury.
