Although it is not know precisely when these aperture cards were produced, it appears that the majority were created by the New Zealand Electricity Department (NZED) and the Electricity Division of the Ministry of Energy (NZE) in the 1970s and 1980s. 

Although the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand Ltd (ECNZ) also produced its own aperture cards only a small number (19) are currently held by Archives New Zealand. 

The collection of aperture cards in this series were transferred by ECNZ immediately prior to its disestablishment and appears to have been maintained by ECNZ's Strategic Development Group. 

Creation process 
The aperture cards in this series appear to be part of a collection of master aperture cards of technical drawings, tables of figures, graphs and maps relating to power generation throughout New Zealand. 

The dates of the originals range from the early 1920s to the late 1980s, however, the majority of originals appear to have been created by NZE in the 1970s and 1980s. 

As they are all stamped 'tracing destroyed' it is thought that the originals from which they were produced have been destroyed, however, no documentation has been found to support this conclusion. 

System of classification 
The aperture cards are arranged by the alphanumeric classification code marked on the original drawing. In addition to this classification code each card also has a second alphanumeric code which related to the physical location of the original (e.g. 40/a4). 

There are in fact two alphanumeric classification coding systems: 

NZE/NZED Alpha-prefix running number 
The alpha prefixes present in W5055 are: E, F, SF, SX, X, Z. It is not known what the prefixes refer to.

ECNZ Alpha Multiple number 
e.g. EP/Wn/02/0009/F001 where EP/Wn stands for Electricorp Production, Wellington.
