This series comprised the central filing system of the Office of the Controller and Auditor-General. File subjects included Audit Office clients, administrative and policy matters, and topics relating to the functions of the Audit Office.
The file system was arranged by alphanumeric subject classifications. Files are coded according to the type of file (e.g. CO/- Correspondence) or the client group that the particular client belongs to (e.g. CG/- central government, LG/- local government). Within each section files are arranged alphabetically by client name.
Following a review in 1991 the alphanumeric classification system replaced a multiple number subject system (Series 7575) used by the predecessor agency (the Audit Department). New alphanumeric references were written ('top-numbered') onto existing files rather than closing all old system files and opening new ones with the new numbering system. Due to this, some top-numbered files in this series predate the series start date, as they date back to 1983. From 1991-1993 therefore, there was also a period of overlap during which both file series were in use. A second review in 1993 introduced a simplified version of the alphanumeric system. At this stage all old files were closed and replaced with new colour-coded files.

Restricted files are indicated as such in the series list. The restriction period applies in each instance from the date of the last paper on a given file (e.g. 25 years from date of file closure). Please note that once the restriction period ends for a given file, Archives New Zealand must consult with the Office of the Auditor General to determine if the file can be declared fully open. Therefore, only those files noted as 'O' (open) in the list are currently open for research.
