The minutes were written regarding inwards letters, which were then forwarded to Gold Fields Department officials for action.  This included individual Goldfields Commissioners, Wardens, Gold Receivers, Resident Magistrates and (to 1867) the Secretary for Gold Fields.  Minutes were written by the Superintendent, Provincial Secretary, Under-Secretary, and (from 1867) the Secretary for Lands and Works. 


In April 1864, it was decided that separate letterbooks would be used for all the outward letters and memoranda to provincial departments, and for outward minutes on inward letters.  In this instance, the earlier letterbook of letters and minutes (series 703), was continued to be used for the minutes only.  Therefore, from April 1864, the first letterbook (item 104) contained only the outward minutes on correspondence (pages 269-509 of volume).  Copies of outward letters and memoranda to the Gold Fields Department from April 1864 were not included, and were recorded in separate letterbooks (series 750).


The minutes usually had registration numbers from the registers of correspondence (series 719).  At the front of the volume is an alphabetical nominal and subject index.
