	This series was created by the Nelson Conservancy Headquarters of the New Zealand Forest Service. The Nelson Conservancy covered the former provincial districts of Nelson and Marlborough with a conservancy headquarters based in Nelson.. The office, and the district offices it controlled,  had the responsibility for administering the day-to-day Forest Service activities within the region at an operational level. These basically involved the establishment, management and development of the state owned forests in terms of the Forest Act 1949 (and its predecessors) and all of these activities were documented in the series.

	The conservators were responsible for the, management and development of the state owned forests in terms of the Forests Act 1949 and the main registered record series reflected these responsibilities. The work fell under three broad categories: protection, production and recreation. This included the establishment and maintenance of forests and the production and sale of timber; the granting of various licences, leases and permits under the Forest Act and its enforcement; the protection of indigenous flora and fauna and the land; research, and assisting private afforestation.  Files and documents followed the same pattern (and same classification scheme) as Head Office: file sub-series included those dealing with administration, state forest areas, engineering, silviculture, logging, marketing, operations, planning, wild animal control, non-forestry use of forest areas, and nursery operations.

	When the conservancy went out of existence in March 1987, along with the rest of the Forest Service, its functions were taken over by various offices of the Department of Conservation, Ministry of Forestry and Timberlands and parts of the series were inherited by these agencies, often without being absorbed into new series. The series became physically scattered although it is not known why  some of the records ended up in the Rotorua  Conservancy and some in Head Office.
