            [history] => The outward letterbooks cover the administration of old age pensions in the Wanganui District, including Patea, Waverley and Marton. The volumes probably do not record the complete activities of the pensions office. Old Age Pension registers from the same district can be found in series 7916. 

Although efforts have been made, it is not possible to confirm the exact chain of custody of these records from their creation up until 1997. The most probable chain of custody has been set out in Agency Relationships section. In 1997 the volumes were transferred from the New Zealand Income Support Service Wanganui District Office to the Department of Social Welfare Head Office, who in turn transferred them to National Archives. 

Alphabetical indexes by surname of addressee are found at the front of each volume. The physical condition of the bound volumes is typical of letter books, in that the print has sometimes faded or is quite smudged. Nonetheless, valuable information is recorded about the initial management of the pensions, including administrative problems and routine management of the new pensions to investigations of fraudulent claims.
