Some files in this series pre-date the series.  They are files created by three predecessor agencies.  The agencies concerned are the Pensions Department [agency code AATF], the Social Security Department [AATG] and the Department of Education, Child Welfare Division [AALM].  These files were integrated (‘top-numbered’) into the Department of Social Welfare, Head Office’s alpha-numeric subject classification system.  Please note that only the alpha-numeric file number (not the original file number) is present on the file cover and therefore on the series list.
This series of records was controlled by the Department of Social Welfare, Head Office and its successor agencies, although some of the records were created and originally controlled by other agencies.
Some files concerning the New Zealand Council for Social Services were transferred from the Department of Internal Affairs, as part of accession W5333.
Six files concerning the National Advisory Committee on Solvent Abuse (NACSA) were passed to the Ministry of Youth Affairs in 1989, when they took over responsibility for this committee. These items have been transferred under accession W5328. Additionally, the Ministry of Youth Affairs received further material on NACSA from the Ministry of Social Welfare’s alpha-numeric subject filing system. However, this material was top-numbered into their own alpha-numeric filing system [see series 16364]. Therefore series 16364 has been listed as a successor series of 7433.

Files containing adoption information are permanently restricted to comply with the Adoption Act 1955 and the Adult Adoption Act 1985.
